FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need dance experience to take lessons?
No. All dancers start as beginners. The more you practice by attending
dances and taking lessons, the better you will become.

Do I need a partner to take lessons?
No. You can take your private lessons with one of our instructors.  We
encourage you take weekly group lessons with other students who are
at a similar skill level (check out our
Local Calendar for times). Some
couples also choose to take private lessons separately, each with their
own instructor. Others take them together with one instructor.

What should I wear for my dance lesson?
Everyday attire is appropriate for dancing.  For lessons wear casual,
comfortable, cool clothing that is easy to move in.  For your comfort
and safety shoes are required.  We recommend ballroom dance shoes,
but if you do not have dance shoes, a stable, lightweight dress shoe
with socks or nylons is best.  You will not feel comfortable in sneakers,
thongs, rubber-soled shoes or metal spike-heel shoes.

How much can I learn in one private lesson?
After one lesson, a new dancer can learn several basic steps and use
them together in combination to successfully dance an entire song.
Individuals and couples who take the time to practice will retain the
most information.

How much can I learn in a group class?
We understand a group class can be a little overwhelming for a
newcomer with no dance experience. However, they are a lot of fun and
we encourage you to join us and switch partners as often as possible
during your group classes.  Group classes are organized by skill level,
so they are a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends that are at
your same level of dance and to augment your private lessons.   You
are encouraged to have fun and ask questions during Group Classes.

How much can I learn in the introductory series of private
lessons?
After four to six private lessons a newcomer can get the basics down.
You can learn several dances or focus on one particular dance to
maximize your execution of that single dance on the floor. We
encourage you to learn multiple dances so that you can inter-relate
similar steps in several dances and increase your versatility. Imagine
not having to sit out another dance!

How much do dance lessons cost?
Lessons are available to suit any budget. We recommend attending as
many group lessons and Practice Parties as possible so that you can
regularly execute the steps you learn in your private lessons. This will
reinforce your learning process and increase your comfort level on the
dance floor. Our Friday Evening Practice Parties are included with your
weekly private lessons and begin with a free beginner level group
lesson.

Do I have to compete to take lessons?
No. We do teach competition level ballroom dancing. But we also enjoy
teaching beginners and social dancers.

What is the most effective way to learn to dance?
We recommend a series of Private Lessons, Group Classes, and Social
Dances. If possible, taking group classes and/or private lessons twice a
week will help you to learn quickly and retain what you learn.

Most importantly: practice every night, even if it is just for a few
minutes in your kitchen!

For individuals or couples who want to take their dancing beyond social
enjoyment or impressing friends at parties (which you will do!) we
recommend attending and participating in ballroom dance showcases
and competitions. These events are held several times a year locally
and throughout the region, country, and world. We would be happy to
help you set goals and decide on when and where to compete.
